Surface Polishing
Surface polishing is the final step that defines product quality in manufacturing. Industrial polishing brushes deliver consistent, high-quality surface finishes across metal, wood, plastic, and composite materials—from rough grinding through to mirror finishes.
Common Brush Types
Abrasive filament brushes, sisal brushes, cotton buffing wheels, and wire brushes are the workhorses of surface polishing. Each type serves a specific stage in the polishing process, from heavy material removal to final luster.
Recommended Materials
Abrasive-impregnated nylon with silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, or ceramic grit; natural sisal fiber; cotton; and fine wire. Grit selection ranges from coarse (60-80) for aggressive cutting to fine (320-600) for final polishing.
Polishing Process Stages
Stage 1 - Rough Grinding: Wire brushes and coarse abrasive filament brushes remove heavy surface imperfections, weld marks, and mill scale. Grit range: 60-120.
Stage 2 - Intermediate Finishing: Medium-grit abrasive brushes refine the surface, removing scratches from the rough grinding stage. Grit range: 120-240.
Stage 3 - Fine Finishing: Fine abrasive brushes and sisal brushes create a uniform satin or brushed finish. Grit range: 240-400.
Stage 4 - Final Polishing: Soft cotton or sisal buffing wheels with polishing compound produce a mirror-like finish on metal surfaces.
Surface Finish Standards
- Ra (Roughness Average): Target values of 0.8μm for general finishing, 0.4μm for precision components, and 0.1μm or below for mirror finishes.
- #3, #4, #6, #8 Finishes: Standard designations for stainless steel surface finishes commonly used in food, pharmaceutical, and architectural applications.
